Photos from the Open Book Festival in Cape Town with Mandla Langa, Zakes Mda, Sefi Atta, Jonny Steinberg, Andrew Brown, Karina Szczurek, Zethu Matebeni, Sixolile Mbalo and Sindiwe Magona to name a few. It was my first book festival and I must say I had a really good time! Thought provoking too... My highlight? Zelda la Grange, Nelson Mandela's personal assistant of many years, sharing some really entertaining insights of her time with the great man.
The BMW International Polo match between South Africa and the USA today. Clearly when it comes to stomping down divots, it's the thought that counts...never mind the heels!
Photos from my book launch held on the 19 August 2014 at Exclusive Books, Melrose Arch in Johannesburg. A big Thank You to Alison, Terry, Thando, Karabo, Andrea, Laura, Babs, Bridget, Lorraine, Luntente, Shylock, Chi, Pamela, Nicolise, K, Windsor, Robyn and all those who in countless ways made the evening such an overwhelming success.
A powerful excerpt from Dying in New York appeared in the Sunday Independent today. In the editor's words, 'This hard-hitting book features an elder who displays one face to the world while he beats his wife and sexually abuses his child'. I couldn't have put it more succinctly.
It felt a bit like going to the dentist: There were people milling around a waiting room with old sofas encircling a table strewn with old magazines and fresh coffee. The oddest thing was seeing someone get up and follow one of the SABC staff outside and then in a few minutes see that same person on the television screen, talking animatedly to an interviewer. It was quite disconcerting.
Then a nervous wait in another room adjacent to a dimly lit lab-like area where technicians and producers huddled over banks of glowing monitors, like they were controlling drones over Afghanistan. Then all too soon it was my turn. I was ushered into a small winged chair and before I knew it a microphone was clipped to my lapel and the host, Musah Mkalipi, was asking me where I got the inspiration to write Dying in New York.
She was great.
... and it's not even launched formally yet!
